Today, the first Express Entry draw of September for Canadian Experience Class (CEC) sent out 4,000 invitations to apply (ITAs) for permanent residency (PR).
This draw targeted profiles with a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 509 or above, a 2-point rise in the cutoff score as compared to the previous CEC draw.
This marks the 6th Express Entry draw of the year dedicated only for Canadian Experience Class candidates, inviting a total of 24,800 profiles in 2024.
Overall the cutoff score is down by 13 points from the first CEC draw in May 2024.
CEC draws resumed after immigration minister Marc Miller indicated that one of the ways of reducing temporary residents’ population in Canada is by transitioning them to permanent residency.

Tips to Improve Your CRS Score for Future Draws
If your CRS score fell short of the minimum cut-off in this draw, don’t be discouraged.
There are several ways to enhance your score and improve your chances in upcoming draws. Here are some proactive steps you can take:
- Boost Your Language Scores: Language proficiency in English or French is one of the most heavily weighted factors in the CRS. Taking the IELTS or CELPIP for English, or TEF for French, and achieving higher scores can significantly increase your overall ranking.
- Increase Your Education: If you’ve obtained a new degree or certification since entering the pool, ensure that your profile is updated with these credentials. Higher education levels can provide valuable points.
- Gain More Work Experience: Additional years of work experience in your field, especially if it’s recognized as a high-demand occupation, can boost your CRS score. Canadian work experience, in particular, adds considerable value.
- Obtain a Provincial Nomination: Securing a nomination from one of Canada’s provinces through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) can add 600 points to your CRS score—virtually guaranteeing an ITA.
- Get a Valid Job Offer: A valid job offer from a Canadian employer can also boost your CRS score by up to 200 points, depending on the position and the terms of employment.
- Spousal Factors: If your spouse or partner has strong language skills or education credentials, you can claim additional points on your Express Entry profile by including these factors.
By taking these proactive steps, you can significantly improve your chances of being invited to apply for permanent residency in Canada through future Express Entry draws.
